Week of Service |
Even under the current circumstances, Division 12 East’s “Week of Service” did not fail to impress to bring creativity and fun to service events. A specific event I attended was Color A Smile, hosted on July 13 by Piedmont. For this event, we colored pages while listening to music and meeting Key Clubbers from different schools. Not only was it a great way to meet new people, but it was super de-stressing as well. When we finished our pages, we sent them off to senior citizens and troops via mail in hopes of making their day. I also attended Friday’s event, which was hosted by multiple schools on the 17th. After going through division updates for the DCM, we jumped straight into trivia questions through WFP’s website called “Freerice.” By answering questions in various categories, Freerice donates grains of rice to underprivileged families and children for correct answers. Keyclubbers strived to get the most points to remain at the top of the leaderboard, so the event turned the zoom call into a fun competition and engaged a lively conversation. Overall, both events I attended were put together so well and was a great opportunity to spend time and have fun with other Key Clubbers in the district to work for a great cause. I definitely look forward to seeing what other online service events Key Club hosts over quarantine! - Rishita Dhalbisoi, Sophomore Representative |

In the month of June, I had the opportunity to attend Love Letters for Literacy with many of our members and peers. At this event, volunteers were tasked with making a packet of cards with the alphabet that would later be sent to the families of these children to help them learn the alphabet and improve their reading skills. It was a fairly simple activity, but one that had potential to be able to make a positive impact and help out many children. I also enjoyed this event because it was very relaxing to do and we got to hang out together in a Zoom call listening to music together! Volunteers also had a lot of creative control with the task and this allowed our members to express themselves through art in this way, which is great both for them but also for the recipients of the cards! I would definitely recommend others to attend this event if we ever host it again in the future, because it’s super easy and you can do so much good with it and help impact someone’s life for the better!

MSJ Senior Goodbye Videos and Notes |
On the week of May 18th, MSJ Key Club decided to put together a video, notes, and gifts for each of our senior Key Club officers to show our care and well wishes. Each Key Club officer sent in videos and wrote small notes for our leaving officers and expressed our thoughts and our thanks for such a wonderful year. We also put together small decorated mason jars filled with goodies such as pretty fairy lights, chocolates, and much more. Finally, we also plan to possibly put together money to buy our seniors gifts. Although small, we believe that it's the thought that counts, especially during this hard time. Spending this year with our team has strengthened all of the bonds between our officers. We are extremely sad to say goodbye, but wish the best for all of our leaving senior officers and will miss them dearly!

With the social distancing orders in place, there has been a drastic decrease in the number of service opportunities these past few weeks. However, it always amazes me to see the impact of Key Club in our community. One event I had the pleasure of participating in this month was "Project Frontline Thank You", in which volunteers wrote cards that would be sent out to the healthcare workers at our local hospitals. This activity allowed me to delve back into hobbies that I have given up on in the past. Decorating and coloring these cards was honestly so fun and I am glad that they are going towards a wonderful cause. Despite the completely unanticipated situation, I am so proud of our members' never-ending passion for service and I look forward to seeing all that we will accomplish together in the future.
